Myself and Twenty Faces

"Since everybody else is so cool and knows everything about their name, I will be a band-wagon jumper, and delve into the meaning of my moniker.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Andrew is the English form of a given name and surname common in many countries. Common alternative include Andrey, Andrei, or Andreiy. Other, less common, versions include ‘Andreas’, ‘Andrés’, ‘Anders’, ‘Endrew’, 'Andrej' and ‘André’. ‘Andrew’ is a common name in English-speaking countries. In the 1990s it was among the top ten most popular names for baby boys in those countries.[3] In Italian, the equivalent to ‘Andrew’ is ‘Andrea’, though ‘Andrea’ is feminine in most other languages.

The word comes from old greek 'aner/andros', meaning "male", like androids (similar than a man) and androgynous (male and female at same time, when gyne/gynaikos in old greek means female, as in the word gynaecologist). The name in fact is the adjective of the word "male", meaing exactly "masculine".

Andrew is frequently shortened to ‘Andy', `Randy` or ‘Drew’. Some religious figures and buildings of the Roman Catholic Church and other Christian denominations use the name Andrew, such as Saint Andrew the apostle, or the many churches named in the honor of Saint Andrew.

Andrew the Apostle (Greek: Ἀνδρέας, Andreas; early first century—mid to late first century AD), called in the Orthodox tradition Protokletos, or the First-called, is a Christian Apostle and the brother of Peter the Apostle. The name "Andrew" (from Greek : "ἀνδρεία", Andreia, manhood, or valour), like other Greek names, appears to have been common among the Jews from the second or third century BC. No Hebrew or Aramaic name is recorded for him.

Hurricane Andrew was the final and third most powerful of three Category 5 hurricanes to make landfall in the United States during the 20th century, after the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 and Hurricane Camille in 1969. Andrew caused 65 deaths along its path.

Andrew is the name of the current Duke of York, son of Queen Elizabeth II. Other notable Andrews include American presidents Andrew Jackson and Andrew Johnson, entrepreneur and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and artist Andy Warhol.

Andrew is a popular name throughout the USA, overall being the 8th most popular name in 2006. It is particularly popular in Missouri and Indiana, where it was the 3rd most popular name. It is somewhat less popular outside of the USA, but is in the top 50 in various Canadian provinces, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Rescuing Me From Myself

Unfaithful
I have taught you
With will, resolve and might
To be
A lesser being
And search for what is right

As growing
From an infant
You went from milk to meat
And never
Straying from the cross
Where Christ makes you complete

Now never
Turn from Holiness
To His face fix your eyes
One day
He will return to us
Full of glory, He will rise... (or descend, if you will. He will rise as King of Kings among the nations, however.)

Even Green Grass Can Feel Like Winter

"This is an edgy thought. Peculiar and arousing, if you will. Eyebrows may arise, if you will.

How come God is so gracious to the ungrateful? When something happens in our life, we shout 'why?' and stare at the sky. We already know that we don't deserve His help. We already know that when He does something (which He will) we will not be truly grateful. 'Thanks God!' is not grateful. Dancing with joy saying 'Praise God!' is not grateful. That is happy. That is happy and satisfied that your Dad stooped over, and gave you a present on a day when you were a really terrible child. We're spoiled, and we know it.

A grateful heart is one that not only recognizes the abundance of the grace of God, but learns and grows from it. A grateful heart is one that acts out in blessing, when blessed. A grateful heart gives when given to. A heart that not only says, 'Thanks God for not punishing me for disappointing you so much and being really amazing even when I act like crap. In fact, thanks for all the gifts you give even when I don't so much as whisper your name for weeks!', but also strives for maturation and the bestowal of these blessings on others. Slightly cynical? Possibly. Learning a lot about myself through trials and tribulations? Definitely."

It's Like Birth And Re-Birth And Something After Death

"I am going to be back at it tomorrow. I don't know what the week holds, but I do know that I will disappear from some of your visions, only to be found again in another's. It's like my integration into the system, for a temporal period, until I'm found alive in the depths, and slowly drawn out again. All I ask, is that you don't forget me. Don't leave me in there alone. If you see me and I don't smile, smile anyways, cause it may be what gets me through the day. Seriously though, I'm a total drama queen.

I love being a total weirdo sometimes. Maybe not weird, but just a little unorthodox. Smiling at people on the bus. Walking like you have nowhere to go. Talking to yourself is a fun one. Pretending like you know everyone at school while you walk down the halls. Wearing your lab coat on the bus to make people think you're either a doctor, or crazy. Raising your hands up and shaking your head at the sky when you stroll outside in the sunshine. Dancing in line at Tim Hortons. Or at least, tapping your foot rhythmically and imagining yourself dancing cause you're too scared to actually do it. Whispering obnoxiously loud across a classroom at a beautiful bearded man with a Macbook, hoping he'll notice. These are a few of the things I do to entertain myself. And perhaps some other people too. Rarely, will you actually catch me being anything other than my drab old self, but just know, that deep inside my head, my pseudo self is having a lot of fun."

A Feature

They Called Her Manhattan

by Acoustic Wordplay

"She ran with bright lights and even greater hopes. She was a pretty dress queen who only wanted you to notice her, maybe even smile. Did you notice here? She was acoustic, such soul in her voice. Here eyes were a midnight sonata, a sigh of relief. She wanted to be held so that her tears wouldn't keep.

But it was this time, she didn't care if she found what she was looking for. But even in the left behind, she was already on the mend. For when she couldn't breathe and she lost sleep, Manhattan was finding home.

All the misty eyes and late night skies, they pointed to her only hope. So when she cursed and screamed and dreamed a dreamer's dream, the beauty of it showed. And to her surprised, those blinded eyes, they had become different. They never saw so much before."

Flying's A Lot Like Falling

"If I could love you
to kingdom come
I'd send you through the clouds
and space
and time
with my heart and
wings like silent vespers
would carry you higher
still
until
you reached those pearly gates
and rang with
resolution on the cold bars
crying like rain
I forgot
I can't follow you..."

More Thoughts On Northrop Frye

"To articulate an idea, an individual must have developed, understand and be able to relate that idea. It is much more appealing to reduce, reuse and recycle when it comes to ideas and understanding literary work. Growing up, we are taught by, not only our parents, but our elementary and secondary school teachers as well. We are heavily influenced by peers at the same time. All of these influences shape our ideas and our thought processes into a roaring mass of opinions, borrowed thoughts, and overused cliches. We often take for granted what we are thinking, because we don't understand why we are thinking that way. This is why many university students are unable to express themselves with any originality. They have accepted every ounce of information fed to them at face value and now feel guilty about developing any thoughts of ideas that differ from their established, inherited views. Northrop Frye is correct in saying "It is a fight... for the maturation of the mental process"."
